Robert Gogan was born in Dublin in the 1950s. By the age of seventeen he had developed a keen interest in English literature and had discovered James Joyce. He read Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses. He was greatly influenced by Ulysses and it changed his attitude and approach to English literature and also revised his relationship with Dublin. He practised as a Barrister-at-Law in the early ’80s and his exposure to different aspects of the English language helped to enhance his understanding of Joyce’s wordplay in Ulysses.
In 2014 Robert wrote a one-man show entitled Strolling Through Ulysses! – directed mainly at people who had never experienced the great novel – in which he outlines, in an entertaining presentation, the main events and characters of Ulysses.
Strolling Through Ulysses! had its genesis in a play entitled “The Bloomsday Story” which Gogan performed and produced with two other actors in 2012. He has performed Strolling Through Ulysses! in many venues throughout Ireland. It has been, and continues to be, a great success.
In 2012 he published Ulysses Remastered, an original version of Ulysses into which he introduced some additional punctuation, formatting and reading guidelines to help people to read and enjoy Ulysses.
