Hilary Dully is a documentary filmmaker, writer and the editor of On Dangerous Ground- A Memoir of the Irish Revolution (Lilliput Press), written by revolutionary period veteran, Máire Comerford. The memoir was published in late 2021, 40 years after Máire’s death, and was a labour of love for Hilary, who is related by marriage to Máire Comerford. On Dangerous Ground was recently described as ‘a classic in the very hour of its launch’ by History Ireland magazine and as ‘a moving and vivid memoir’ by Books Ireland.

Hilary’s documentary films have been commissioned and broadcast on RTE, Channel 4 and TG4 and have been shown at Irish and international film festivals. For periods from 2010 to 2021, she taught documentary and film practice on the MA in Production & Direction, NUI Galway. Hilary completed her doctorate in Digital Arts in 2017, when she was awarded a PhD with film practice. Hilary is primarily interested in producing films that explore creative boundaries, have interesting or unusual perspectives, are intimate and exploratory, or reflect the experiences of those who are forgotten or invisible in the national conversation. Hilary lives in rural East Clare, where she has initiated and produced a number of films about, or in conjunction with, her local community. She is presently at the research stage of a documentary film charting Irish Republicanism from the Revolutionary Period to the present day, with Máire Comerford’s extensive archive acting as a unique springboard for engagement with the subject matter.
