Dr. Maureen Gaffney is a well-known psychologist, writer and broadcaster and has worked in many areas of Irish life. Dr. Maureen Gaffney is a well-known psychologist, writer and broadcaster and has worked in many areas of Irish life. She was the Director of the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Psychology in Trinity College Dublin and as Adjunct Professor of Psychology and Society at University College Dublin. Earlier in her career, she worked as a clinical psychologist in the Irish health service. She served on a number of state and private boards, including the Law Reform Commission; the Health Service Executive: the Council of the ESRI; as Executive Chair of the NESF; and as Chair of the Insurance Ombudsman Council of Ireland. She works as a consultant on leadership and resilience with major companies in Ireland, the US and the UK.
She earned her B.A. in Psychology at University College Cork, her M.A. in Behavioural Sciences at the University of Chicago and her Ph.D. at Trinity College Dublin and has completed Executive Education programmes in leadership and corporate governance in the Harvard Kennedy School and the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. She is a member of Harvard Kennedy School Women’s Leadership Board and served on its Executive Committee.
She is the author of two best-selling books Flourishing (Penguin 2011) which focused on the science and art of wellbeing; and Your One Wild And Precious Life (Penguin 2021) which describes how the three basic psychological needs for connection, autonomy, and competence play out at each stage of life and shape our happiness, wellbeing and success.
